From Bernard Gaynor Dear Larry, Last year the Federal Court ordered the Classification Review Board to reassess the paedophile fantasy comic Gender Queer which had originally been granted an Unrestricted rating. I wrote to the Classification Review Board in January objecting to any participation by its convenor, Ms Susan Bush, in relation to the new decision on grounds of bias and apprehended bias. Ms Bush describes herself as an ‘LGBTQIA+ advocate’. She also signed off on the unlawful decision to grant this book an Unrestricted rating after the Classification Review Board decided that the vast majority of public submissions (which objected to the paedophilia imagery in this book) were ‘anti-LGBTQIA+’.
On Friday I was informed that Ms Bush will not be part of the panel that will provide a new assessment for Gender Queer. The timing of this news is interesting. By my count, the Classification Review Board should have handed down its decision last Thursday – a day before I received this email. Obviously, the Classification Review Board is having difficulty deciding what to do with Gender Queer. It seems that wokeness has run up against the law. Ms Bush could be jumping ship because she does not like the decision coming. Or she could be trying to prevent another legal challenge. We’ll just have to wait and see.
But the decision to remove Ms Bush from the panel is itself a win.
