 The government’s proposed ‘cash mandate’ will only apply to: Large supermarkets Large fuel retailers Transactions under $500 The ‘cash mandate’ will NOT apply to: Pharmacies, doctors, medical clinics. Big retailers – eg: KMart, Bunnings, Chemist Warehouse, Tyrepower, Harvey Norman, etc Governments and councils – eg: Fees, fines, rates, licenses, registrations. Corporations – eg: Banks, insurers, lenders etc. Any other retailer – eg: car repair, newsagents, clothing, footwear, household goods, McDonalds, KFC, etc. Any other service provider – eg: Landlords, pools, sports stadiums, clubs, pubs, restaurants, etc etc etc …

+Big business doesn’t have to accept cash under these draft regulations. Daniel Mulino says consumers have the option to pay their bills in cash at Australia Post “through Post Billpay on the current terms of this service.” Currently yes, but that could end on day one of these new regulations because corporations, utilities and councils are not mentioned in this ‘cash mandate.’ Mandating cash acceptance is NOT ‘a step closer,’ it seems to be further away than ever before.

A cash mandate is supposed to ensure that cash is accepted everywhere, with very few exceptions. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the cash mandate would apply to all retailers selling essentials including food, medicine and fuel. He released a list of essential items that included housing, car repairs, clothing, drinks, utility bills and other essentials of life. Since announcing the ‘cash mandate’ (prior to the last election) the government seems to have changed tack and decided that cash should not be mandated at all.

The government’s cash mandate does NOT mandate cash Supermarkets will only be required to have one cash terminal.  We are all waiting to pay with cash, but only two (out of fourteen) terminals accept cash. These lines are going to be more common, under Jim Chalmers’ new ‘cash mandate.’
