are at it again immediately claiming this headline – “500,000 Chinese ‘spies’ can now own U.S. farmland? Trump approves” is exaggerated and mixes together two separate issues:
Chinese ownership of American farmland
Chinese students in the U.S.
There is no evidence that the Trump administration approved “500,000 Chinese spies” owning farmland. What actually happened:
During a recent interview, Donald Trump defended allowing Chinese students to study in the U.S. and also made comments suggesting that completely banning Chinese purchases of farmland could hurt U.S. farm prices.
Trump said he still supports protecting land near sensitive military facilities.
At the same time, his administration has also pushed policies to restrict or ban Chinese ownership of U.S. farmland, especially near military bases.
The “500,000” figure refers to Chinese students studying in the U.S., not farmland buyers. Some commentators online combined those comments into a more inflammatory narrative.
